Building student involvement, fostering civic engagement and enhancing community service to advance public health.

About

Smile Squad is a student-run community outreach organization that was first organized in 1982. Our main focus is to improve the oral health of Boston and its surrounding communities. We accomplish this goal by promoting important dental concepts, such as prevention and nutrition. Through the Smile Squad, students have the unique opportunity to maximize their exposure to the dental health challenges in the community.

The Smile Squad places emphasis on oral health education by visiting schools in the Boston area. While in the classroom, student dentists discuss the importance of proper oral hygiene and nutrition through presentations, puppet shows, and one-on-one instruction, depending upon the age group of the children. In the past year alone, we have visited schools in Dorchester, Roxbury, Medford, just to name a few. We also participate in health fairs, such as the Oak Street Fair in Chinatown. More recently, the Smile Squad has broadened its scope to include visits with special needs children and assisted living facilities.

All Smile Squad events are high-energy, busy and fun! You will have the opportunity to interact with many children and their families and teach them how to take care of their teeth. If you are interested in participating in Smile Squad activities, please contact one of our E-board members.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Smile Squad Faculty Advisor, Dr. Karen Wallach.
