Building student involvement, fostering civic engagement and enhancing community service to advance public health.

Dear Jumbos,

Tufts University’s Health Sciences Campus is uniting together to show support for our campus home, Boston’s Chinatown. A group of student leaders from the Dental and Medical school have started an initiative called “Cherish Chinatown”, which includes an educational component and a service component. The aim of this initiative is to:

1. Educate students and staff on the history of Chinatown, and Tufts University’s impact within the community.

2. Provide student-led service projects that have been requested by Chinatown residents and non-profit partners to encourage Tufts students and staff to help the Chinatown community in a culturally sensitive manner.

This is a GREAT opportunity for Tufts students, faculty, and staff to learn more about our role as both providers and neighbors within Chinatown, and to serve our resident community with intent.

OUR FIRST SERVICE DAY will be a part of the City of Boston’s Love Your Block initiative, a city-wide clean-up effort on Friday, April 30th. Please join us by signing up for a 2-hour shift. We will have a Tufts University welcome table on the day of the clean-up where we will provide you with clean-up materials, directions, and SNACKS from local Chinatown bakeries. As we get closer to the date, we will email you with more information regarding the exact clean-up meeting location, time we would like you to arrive, and other helpful logistics for the day.

For now, please mark your calendar for your first and second choice two-hour blocks so you can be sure your schedule remains open. If your plans change and you are no longer available for the time slots you’ve signed up for, please email communityrelations@tufts.edu as it is important for us to keep track of exact volunteer numbers due to City of Boston social distance guidelines. We will likely need to cap sign-ups at 25 people per block, so please only volunteer if you know you will definitely be available on Friday, April 30th.
We will be in touch soon to share more details about the educational component of Cherish Chinatown. Please also save the date for another service day on Friday, May 21st from 12pm to 4pm.

We hope to see you there!

Best,

Timothy Lo
