Although the pandemic has changed how student organizations interact with the surrounding community, it has not changed students’ desires to serve the community. Under the leadership of Ashley Makala, Community Service Chair for Student National Dental Association (SNDA), members of SNDA created virtual story time for patients at Tufts Children’s Hospital.
Nancy Marks, Community Service Coordinator, connected SNDA with Andrea Colliton, Director of Child Life Services at Tufts Children’s Hospital. After learning the vision for how we could best serve the children, SNDA members got to work! From D21s to D24s, students read a variety of stories in both English and Spanish. Members recorded and produced 25 stories for children at the hospital to enjoy. Patients will be able to access the stories on a phone, IPad or laptop from their beds. We hope this will both help pass the time and know we are thinking of them!
Next steps? Nancy will be working with Ashley to get the stories shared with other health care institutions and maybe even some after care programs!
