Building student involvement, fostering civic engagement and enhancing community service to advance public health.

American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) has taken over the 7th floor bulletin board! Throughout the month of March, check out the board by the student lounge to learn more about the group and the population it serves! Learn about the many service opportunities and great lectures offered by AADMD and check out interesting facts about those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and how we can better care for them as dental health professionals.

AADMD would like to highlight a special national event called End the R Word that happens every March. Spread the Word to End the Word is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies, and their supporters to inspire respect and acceptance through raising the consciousness of society about the R-word and how hurtful words and disrespect can be toward people with intellectual disabilities.

Respectful and inclusive language is essential to the movement for the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities. However, much of society does not recognize the hurtful, dehumanizing and exclusive effects of the R-word.

The word retard (ed) hurts millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends.

Language affects attitudes. Attitudes impact actions.
