The Tufts Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) volunteered at a Health Fair in East Boston on October 29, 2016. Elizabeth Betances (D18) reflects on her experience:
“Volunteering at the Children’s Health Fair in East Boston was a new and fun learning experience for me. Our group taught children of various ages about caring for their teeth, nutrition, and visiting the dentists. The kids were engaged and really excited to learn. Some of them went back to practice brushing on “Max” the monkey, long after the lesson was over. I learned how to personalize the learning session and get the kids excited for oral health. It was also a new challenge to use dental terms and plain language in Spanish. I think the kids learned a lot from jeopardy and the visuals of the progression of caries, and it is rewarding to know that this could make a difference in their health. ”
