The representation of women in leadership positions has not paralleled the increasing number of women joining the dental profession. The Women in Leadership Initiative at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine is recognizing this lack of representation and is setting a goal to strive to empower more females; specifically in the first and second years of dental school to take on leadership roles in the school and in the community.

This student-run initiative will motivate and encourage incoming female dental students to develop their own leadership style and allow them to connect with their peers and mentors. With many leadership opportunities from within the classroom, clinic, and community, our goal can be achieved through close mentoring, support and community empowerment. The women we empower will be able to take these skills and utilize them not only within the Tufts community but also in their careers as dentists. This will in turn further impact other women not only in dentistry, but also in their surrounding communities and the world. The Women in Leadership initiative receives ongoing support from the TUSDM Office of Student Affairs and Office of Public Health.

We are inviting all the first year (D20) women to attend our seminar on leadership styles and to encourage them to run for leadership positions in their class as well as other organizations at Tufts. This event is unique in that it is student-run and that we will be showcasing female students on a panel who currently hold leadership positions either in their class or in an organization. Following the panel, we will continue the discussion centered on empowering women to emerge as leaders in the community at TUSDM. There will also be time for connecting with other students and faculty over dinner.
