In May 2019, our Global Service Learning team will travel to Cajamarca, Peru to provide free dental care in the small, rural community of Granja Porcon. This is the second trip in the ongoing collaboration between Tufts Dental’s Global Service Learning Program and the Health Sciences Program at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in Lima.

We are a team of ten Tufts Dental students (eight 3rd years, one 2nd year, one 1st year), and we’re incredibly thrilled for this opportunity to serve in Peru. Under the supervision of our faculty advisor Dr. Leopoldo Correa and five additional professors (Dr. Boris Bacanurschi, Dr. Gregory Kosmidis, Dr. Athena Papas, Dr. Mary Talmo, Dr. James Theodore), we will provide oral health education and dental services to hundreds of patients in Granja Porcon.

Our team aims to work together with dental faculty and students from UPC to tackle this critical public health issue. Through preventive and restorative care, as well as education to ensure sustainable outreach, we hope to improve the oral health status of our patients in Granja Porcon and promote healthy, long-term practices.

This trip promises to be a testament of teamwork, open-mindedness, and, most importantly, giving back to a community in need. We hope you will consider supporting our endeavor and making this amazing journey possible!
