What is a Poverty Simulation?
It is an interactive immersion learning experience designed to help you feel what is like to live as a member of a low income family.
Imagine you are a mother whose husband has just left you and your children with only $5.00 in your bank account or you are a grandparent raising your incarcerated daughter’s children or a father of three with a disabled wife. These are some of the people you will encounter by participating in the Poverty Simulation.

Why is this important for you as a dental student?
During your dental school education, particularly during the Community Service Learning Externship Program, as well as throughout your careers, you will encounter patients that live below the poverty line. The poverty simulation will help make you: empathetic to the lives of some of your patients, more understanding of the issues that many patients are dealing with and more understanding as to why patients make some of the decisions that they make, especially, regarding their oral health care.
