SNDA Impressions Day 2015

Impressions Day is an annual SNDA program that invites students from undergraduate institutions and high schools to TUSDM to expose them to the field of dentistry. The event pays particular attention to inviting students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in dentistry to come and learn about the field of dental medicine and Tufts Dental School.

This year, the event had over 120 high school & college student participants and 60 volunteers from the TUSDM administration, faculty, alumni, pre-doctoral program (D16s, D17s, D18s, and D19s), and Kaplan Test Prep.

During Impressions Day, students had the opportunity to learn about
requirements and prerequisites to enter dental school and hear from some of TUSDM’s most esteemed community members, including Dean Huw Thomas and Dean Nadeem Karimbux. Student participants also participated in multiple educational activities including the following: DAT/SAT instructions, mock dental school interviews, and hands on activities: alginate impressions/composite restorations on typodonts. All of these activities were run and led by TUSDM student volunteers.

D17s at the Special Olympics

SpecialOlymSeveral weeks ago, the D17s headed out to the Special Olympics Massachusetts State Soccer Tournament in Byfield, MA. At the event, there were over 800 athletes competing the tournament. D17 class members set up a table and provided oral hygiene instructions to event participants and their families. They also provided dietary instructions to help prevent dental decay. D17 Community Service Chair Mike Arrigo reflected on the event:

SO2“We really learned the importance of engaging with the community and the importance of having people see us outside of the office, in a non-threating, fun enviornment. It is a great way to help build trust between the dental community and the community at large. We really enjoyed our experience and hope to continue going back to this event in the following years.”

AAPD Halloween Party

Last month, the AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentists) hosted a Halloween Party in the TUSDM Pediatric clinic. The event was an informative and fun session for the pediatric patients of TUSDM and their parents. Along with teaching the children proper oral hygiene technique, AAPD members spoke with them about choosing healthier snacks over the Halloween season, as well as safe trick or treating practices. Some patients had the chance to read a story book based on nutrition. Each patient was given a goody bag with toothbrushes and toothpaste, pretzels, water, a coloring book and other small Halloween themed goodies. Special thanks to AAPD Community Service Chair Tracy Tchintchin (D18) for sending us some great pictures!

Schweitzer Fellowship Information Session

image001Karen Spiller, Interim Program Director of the Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program, will be on campus on Tuesday 12/1 from 4:00-5:00 pm in SK216B to promote the Schweitzer Fellowship program. Schweitzer Fellows annually serve more than 25,000 people and offer prevention, wellness and access programs that address the underlying causes of health inequities, such as poverty, the environment, and education. In doing so, the Schweitzer Fellowship works to improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Each year, Tufts PHPD students are selected as Schweitzer Fellows, and many have been able to conduct their ALE project as a part of the fellowship.

The Fellowship gives selected students the opportunity to create and implement their own public health project to serve the local community. Please join us to hear more about the fellowship and application process (application deadline is February 15, 2016). To learn more visit:
